History
The Blue Lake Public golf course was established in 1961, when the Mount Gambier Chamber of commerce approached the City Council with the idea of constructing a 9 hole golf course adjacent to the Blue Lake Caravan Park. In 1964 the Minister for Lands approved the removal of trees in the area defined for the 9 hole course. That same year the Queen Elizabeth Park Trust (QEPT) was formed to develop the caravan park and the 9 hole golf course. With the caravan park completed the QEPT, in 1978 undertook the feasibility and design studies for the golf course. Following approval for the course design, course construction commenced in late 1978. The 9 Hole public golf course was completed and officially opened on January 12th 1980. It wasn't until 1984 that a group of regular players approached the QEPT seeking permission to form a golf club, and become affiliated with Golf SE & The South Australian Golf Association. This request was subsequently approved and this saw the beginning of The Blue Lake Golf Club (BLGC). The first President was Mr B. Mullane. The club grew to a membership of 136 in its first year and with the addition of interest from the ladies in 1988, the Club continued to prosper. Today the BLGC has a strong membership of over 300, with competitions being held 6 days a week. The Blue Lake Golf Club worked hand in hand with the QEPT developing and re-constructing various holes to improve the quality of the course; to the extent that a second nine holes commenced development in 1995 to bring the course to 18 holes. The second nine holes was completed in 1998, two years ahead of schedule. This was mainly due to the time & efforts of volunteers of the Blue Lake Golf club. The two lots of nine holes are joined together by a road underpass tunnel which was funded by the Blue Lake Golf Club members together with the generosity of Gambier Earth Movers, Mr Ian Sutherland to which the tunnel is named after. The Blue Lake Golf Club has held 2 South Australian PGA competitions in 2007 and 2008 with high praise given to the course in general. There are 2 major events in the calendar year which are the GEM Easter Tournament and the Wayne Scutter Memorial. The Blue Lake Golf Club took over the lease of the public golf course in July 2019. The clubhouse also incorporates the Blue Lake Bar and Bistro promoting the Club as family welcome venue. Hire clubs & motorised vehicles are available as well as fully stocked Golf Shop. Adjacent to the Golf Course is a new under cover all-weather Driving Range. Our Head Green Keeper is assisted by volunteers from the golf club who keep the course in pristine condition. Lush green fairways and magnificent views of the extinct volcanoes are a feature of the course. The Club welcomes all visitors to play golf, or just to relax and take in the views over a refreshing drink and or meal in the Bistro. In December 2022 the BLGC added an 18 Hole Mini Putt Putt to the Blue Lake Golf Links Complex. The course is centered around Icons, Features and Industries of the Limestone Coast. Be sure to check it our with your family or visitors to the region.
